Three kinds of adult swimmer we teach

Never learned

You grew up without lessons, or gave up as a child. You want to be safe in water and enjoy the pool with your family. Lessons start with breathing, floating and standing up from a float, and build from there.

Nervous or afraid

A bad experience, or simply a lifetime of avoiding deep water. Lessons move at your pace in standing-depth water, and nothing is done before you are ready. Most fearful adults are floating on their back within a few lessons.

Can swim, want to swim better

You manage a couple of lengths and stop, out of breath. Lessons fix breathing, body position and stroke mechanics so swimming becomes sustainable exercise. Useful for triathlon and open-water goals too.

What adult lessons cover

Foundations

  • Breath control: exhaling underwater, relaxed inhalation
  • Front and back floating, and recovering to standing
  • Streamlined push-off and glide
  • Treading water and sculling

Strokes

  • Freestyle with side breathing, then bilateral breathing
  • Backstroke for a restful alternative
  • Breaststroke with a kick that spares the knees

Confidence and safety

  • Deep-water entry and exit without panic
  • Floating to rest when tired
  • Swimming a set distance continuously

Fitness and technique

  • Stroke efficiency: fewer strokes per length, less fatigue
  • Pacing and simple interval sets
  • Preparation for open-water swims from Sentosa's beaches

Why adults learn faster at a private pool

Adult beginners in public group classes often spend half the lesson waiting for a turn and the other half worrying about who is watching. A private lesson at your own condominium pool removes both problems. The coach works with you continuously, corrects each attempt, and sets one or two things to practise before the next lesson, which is easy when the pool is downstairs.

Adults also bring an advantage children lack: they can understand why a technique works. A coach explaining that lifting the head sinks the hips is worth a dozen demonstrations. Lessons for adults are usually one hour, 1-to-1 or with a partner.

Lessons take place at Sentosa Cove condominium pools such as The Oceanfront and Cape Royale, which both have 50-metre pools, and at any other development or private pool where you have resident access. See all locations.

Adult lesson questions

Am I too old to learn to swim?

No. Adults in their forties, fifties and sixties learn to swim every year. Adults understand instructions and manage fear consciously, which often makes them faster learners than children once they start.

How many lessons does an adult beginner need?

Many adult beginners float and swim a short distance within four to six lessons, and swim a length with reasonable technique within ten to fifteen. Fear of water can extend this; a pool at home for practice shortens it.

I panic in deep water. Can lessons fix that?

Usually, yes. Lessons start in standing-depth water and build floating, breath control and treading water before any deep-water work. Deep water is introduced gradually, with the coach beside you. See how adults overcome fear of water.

Can my partner and I learn together?

Yes. A pair lesson works well when both are at a similar level. If one is a beginner and the other wants technique work, the coach can split the session.

Will people see me learning?

Lessons are at your own condominium or private pool, at a time you choose. Early mornings and weekday afternoons are usually very quiet.

Are female swimming coaches available?

Yes. You can request a female coach when you enquire. Female coaches are popular for ladies' lessons, for younger children and for families who prefer it. Availability depends on your preferred timing. See ladies swimming lessons.

How long is each swimming lesson?

Lessons for children and adults are usually 45 minutes to one hour. Baby and toddler sessions are shorter, typically about 30 minutes, because young children tire and get cold sooner. The exact duration is confirmed when we match your coach.

How much do swimming lessons in Sentosa cost?

Rates depend on the lesson format (1-to-1, pairs or small group), the swimmer's age and how often you book. Because coaches travel to your pool in Sentosa, private rates are higher than public-pool group classes. Contact us for current Sentosa lesson rates and we will reply with a clear quote, or see our pricing guide for what affects the price.
