Who kids swimming lessons in Sentosa are for

Complete beginners. Children who have never had a lesson, or who splash happily but cannot float or swim. Most of our students start here.

Nervous children. Children who cry at the pool or refuse to put their face in. A private lesson at a familiar pool is the gentlest way through this.

Children who can swim a little. A doggy paddle or a rough freestyle that stops after a few metres. Lessons build proper breathing and technique.

School swimmers. Children preparing for school swimming, a gala or SwimSafer stages who need stroke correction and stamina.

What children learn, in order

Coaches follow this progression at the child's pace. A confident seven-year-old may pass through the first two stages in a couple of lessons; a cautious four-year-old may take a month.

Water confidence

Getting in calmly, wetting the face, blowing bubbles, going under and coming up smiling.

Breathing

Exhaling underwater and inhaling above it in rhythm. The skill that unlocks everything else.

Floating

Front float, back float and recovering to standing. Back floating is a survival skill as much as a swimming one.

Kicking

Flutter kick from the hips with a kickboard, then without. Streamlined push-offs and glides.

Freestyle

Arm cycle, side breathing and coordination, built up from short distances to full lengths.

Backstroke

Body position, continuous kick and arm recovery. Usually taught alongside freestyle.

Breaststroke

The whip kick, arm pull and timing. Taught once freestyle and backstroke are stable.

Water safety

Treading water, floating to rest, swimming in clothes and getting back to the edge after an unexpected fall.

Private or small-group lessons for children?

1-to-1

Best for beginners under six, nervous children and anyone who needs to progress quickly. The coach's full attention means twenty repetitions of a skill in a lesson, not two.

Pair

Siblings or friends of similar age and ability. Children often try harder with a peer alongside, and the cost per child is lower.

Small group of three or four

Works well for neighbours' children at the same level, for example a group of six-year-olds all learning freestyle. Larger than four is not taught at residential pools.

Practical details for parents

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a swim cap for long hair
  • Well-fitting goggles (the coach can advise)
  • Towel, sunscreen and a bottle of water
  • A dry T-shirt for after the lesson

How long lessons last

45 minutes to one hour for children aged four and up. Younger or easily tired children may do better with 45 minutes. The coach adjusts.

Where lessons take place

At your condominium pool in Sentosa Cove or your private pool, subject to resident access and the estate's rules. Beginners use the wading pool or shallow end; stroke work moves to the lap pool.

Kids lesson questions

What age should my child start swimming lessons?

Formal lessons without a parent in the water usually start around four, when children can follow instructions and hold their breath on cue. Younger children benefit from parent-and-toddler sessions first. Read our guide on the best age to start swimming lessons.

How many lessons does a child need to learn to swim?

A four- to seven-year-old beginner typically needs several months of weekly lessons to swim 10 to 15 metres unaided. Older children are often quicker. Practice between lessons at your own pool speeds this up. See how long it takes a child to learn to swim.

My child is scared of the water. Can you help?

Yes, and it is common. Fearful children are taught 1-to-1 in shallow water, starting with games and gradual face-wetting rather than submersion on the first day. Progress is measured in comfort before skill.

Do I stay for the lesson?

Yes. A parent or caregiver stays poolside for every child's lesson at a residential pool. You are welcome to watch quietly, and the coach will brief you at the end.

Can siblings learn together?

Often, yes. Siblings of similar ability can share a lesson, which is usually more economical than two separate slots. If their ages or levels are far apart, a coach may suggest splitting the time so each child gets suitable practice.

Can lessons follow the SwimSafer programme?

Lessons can be structured around the stages of Singapore's national SwimSafer programme if you want your child to progress through recognised skill levels. Ask about this when you enquire.

What should we bring to the first lesson?

Swimwear, goggles, a towel and sunscreen. For babies and toddlers, a swim nappy. Long hair is easier under a cap. The coach brings any teaching aids such as kickboards or floats.

What happens when there is lightning?

Everyone leaves the pool. Coaches follow lightning-risk alerts for the area and the condominium's own pool rules. If the risk does not clear within a reasonable wait, the lesson is rescheduled. Make-up arrangements for weather cancellations are agreed when you book.
