What baby swimming lessons involve

Baby lessons are not about swimming. They are about a baby who is relaxed in water, a parent who knows how to hold and move a baby safely, and the first reflexes and cues that later become breath control and floating.

A typical session moves through gentle entry, cradle and chest holds, walking and gliding the baby through the water, pouring water over the head, and songs that pair a cue such as "ready, go" with a brief dip of the face. Everything is led by the baby's mood on the day.

Sessions last about 30 minutes and take place in the shallow wading pool at your development or your private pool. The coach is in the water with you or poolside, depending on the pool and your preference.

Parents often tell us the biggest benefit is their own confidence: knowing how to hold a baby in water, how to read tiredness and cold, and what to do if a child slips in at the pool edge.

Why start early, and why at home

Babies who are regularly in water before their first birthday tend to be less fearful toddlers, which makes later lessons easier. Sentosa Cove homes sit beside pools, marinas and beaches, so early water familiarity is also a safety matter.

Doing this at your own condominium's wading pool means no travel with a small baby, a familiar environment, and a lesson that can be timed around naps and feeds. Developments with wading pools include The Oceanfront, Cape Royale and Turquoise; landed homes with a shallow pool area work well too. See all locations.

From about 18 months, babies graduate to toddler swimming lessons. Read our guide to the best age to start swimming lessons in Singapore.

Safety notes for parents

  • A parent or caregiver holds the baby at all times; the coach guides, demonstrates and supports.
  • Sessions stop if the baby is cold, tired or upset. Short and happy beats long and miserable.
  • Babies with skin conditions, ear infections or recent illness should wait; ask your doctor if unsure.
  • Outdoor pools are cleared immediately when lightning risk is signalled, as with every lesson.

Baby lesson questions

How old should a baby be to start swimming lessons?

We start parent-and-baby sessions from around six months, when babies hold their head steadily and most have had their early vaccinations. Check with your paediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's health or skin.

Is the condo pool warm enough for a baby?

Singapore's outdoor pools are generally warm during the day, especially shallow wading pools in sunshine. Coaches schedule baby lessons in the warmer parts of the day and keep sessions to about 30 minutes. A baby who is shivering comes out.

Will the coach put my baby underwater?

Only briefly, only on a cue the baby has learned, and only when you are comfortable with it. Submersions are never forced and are always parent-led.

What does my baby wear?

A snug swim nappy, and a swim costume or rash vest over it. Bring a warm towel and a change of clothes for immediately after.

Can both parents join?

Yes. One parent is in the water with the baby; the other is welcome poolside and can swap halfway. It also helps both parents learn the holds.

How long is each swimming lesson?

Lessons for children and adults are usually 45 minutes to one hour. Baby and toddler sessions are shorter, typically about 30 minutes, because young children tire and get cold sooner. The exact duration is confirmed when we match your coach.

What happens when there is lightning?

Everyone leaves the pool. Coaches follow lightning-risk alerts for the area and the condominium's own pool rules. If the risk does not clear within a reasonable wait, the lesson is rescheduled. Make-up arrangements for weather cancellations are agreed when you book.
