What Happens to Swimming Lessons When It Rains?
Rain alone rarely stops a lesson. Lightning always does. Here is how coaches decide, what the wetter months mean for Sentosa Cove families, and how rescheduling works.
Every Sentosa Cove pool is outdoors, so this question comes up in the first conversation with almost every family. The short version: rain is usually fine, lightning never is.
Rain without lightning
Swimmers are already wet, and a warm Singapore shower does not change the water temperature much. Lessons normally continue in light or moderate rain. The coach will stop if rain is heavy enough to affect visibility across the pool, if the child is getting cold, or if the condominium closes the pool.
Lightning
When lightning risk is signalled for the area, everyone leaves the water immediately. Coaches use lightning-risk alerts and the condominium's own pool rules, and do not wait to see a flash. The lesson pauses. If the risk clears within a reasonable wait, the lesson resumes for the remaining time. If not, it is rescheduled.
This is not caution for its own sake. Water conducts, pools are open ground, and Singapore has one of the highest lightning-strike rates in the world.
The wetter months in Sentosa Cove
The north-east monsoon from roughly November to January brings the most frequent afternoon and evening storms. There is a second wetter period around April to May. Being at the coast, Sentosa Cove sees weather arrive quickly. Practical advice from coaches who teach here:
- Book morning slots in the wetter months
- Keep a towel and dry clothes poolside so a paused lesson is not a cold one
- Expect one or two rescheduled lessons per month at the peak, and none for long stretches otherwise
How rescheduling works
A lesson cancelled for weather is rescheduled, not charged. The coach proposes a make-up slot, usually within the same or the following week. Because the pool is at your home, rescheduling is simpler than it would be at a booked venue. Families with a fixed weekly slot keep it; the make-up is additional.
Will the coach cancel before setting out?
Yes, when a storm is clearly established. Coaches check conditions before travelling to Sentosa and message you if the lesson looks unlikely, so you are not waiting at the pool. Sometimes the weather clears unexpectedly and the lesson goes ahead after all; sometimes the reverse. Everyone in Singapore lives with this.
What about cold?
Pool water here rarely gets cold enough to matter for adults, but small children lose heat fast, particularly in wind after rain. Coaches shorten toddler and baby sessions if a child shivers, and the wading pool in sunshine is preferred for them.
